Aug. 12, 1993: Bill Clinton meets with police officers. There's something about looking at Clinton photos that makes me want to eat barbecue and watch porn. (Chronicle file)

.

President Barack Obama will appear in San Francisco today. Based on history, the chances are good that he’ll get his photo taken with 1. Willie Brown; or 2. A cable car.

How do I know this? Because I spent much of last week digging through the Chronicle photo morgue, pulling out 12 administrations worth of Democratic presidential candidate photos in the Bay Area. The gallery starts with Harry Truman in 1948 and ends with Bill Clinton in 1992.

Feel free to bet with your friends what makes more appearances in these photos, a cable car or Willie Brown. I’ve kept a running count of the results in the captions for your wagering pleasure. Warning: The final tally may spur controversy.

Make sure you check last week’s The Republicans! version of this series. President Nixon rides BART, and George Bush wears running shorts that makes rookie year Chris Mullin look conservative by comparison.

A few more thoughts about these photos …

* I wasn’t picking on Michael Dukakis by choosing those two photos. Every one of the images from the campaign trail was equally uninspiring.

* I did develop respect for his then 20-year-old daughter, who ran Bay to Breakers to support her dad. Read this Chronicle article by Delfin Vigil about the Robert F. Kennedy photo provided by the University Club. There’s a good story behind it, and Del’s an excellent writer and student of history. And here’s my colleague Carla Marinucci’s recent story about Jane Morrison, where the Democrat talks about her meeting with JFK.

* Full disclosure: As a 17-year-old, I campaigned for Jesse Jackson, including standing over the Broadway Burlingame overpass with a “Honk for Jesse” sign.

* Here’s JFK’s speech from Charter Day at U.C. Berkeley.

* Finally, a request: There’s nothing I hate more than political sniping in the comments of this blog. Please try to enjoy the photos as a cultural find, and fight about partisan politics elsewhere.

If you have a request for a future archive search, please send it to me on a postcard at:
